The SportStat is a very small, lightweight, pulse oximeter — a device that measures oxygen saturation (%SpO2) and pulse rate. SportStat can be used by a variety of sports enthusiasts, including mountain climbers, hikers, skiers, bikers, and others interested in measuring oxygen saturation and pulse rate. It can be used outdoors in many conditions, including high altitudes, at high and low temperatures, and even in the dark. What is %SpO2? A pulse oximeter tells you what percent of your hemoglobin molecules are carrying oxygen — your oxygen saturation(%SpO2), a reading of 97 tells you that 97% of your hemoglobin molecules are carrying oxygen. At higher altitudes, oxygen saturation (%SpO2) decreases, since there is less oxygen available in the air. Physical exertion at high altitude can be difficult because of the reduced oxygen level. How Do I Read the SportStat? It is important to understand what each symbol and display means: Oxygen Saturation: Displays percent oxygen saturation (%SpO2). Pulse Rate: Displays the number of pulses per minute. Pulse Quality: Blinks green, yellow, or red to indicate changes in pulse quality. How SportStat Works The SportStat Pulse Oximeter shines red and infrared light through a finger and detects the fluctuating signals caused by blood flow. Pulse rate is determined from the signals received by a light detector. The ratio of the fluctuation of the red and infrared light signals is used to calculate the oxygen saturation (%SpO2) of hemoglobin. Two AAA-size batteries power the SportStat for approximately 1,600 spot checks. When the batteries are low, the numeric displays flash once per second. The SportStat will automatically shut off (to conserve battery life) approximately 10 seconds after a finger is removed. SportStat’s advanced digital circuitry requires no adjustment (calibration) or periodic maintenance other than battery replacement. SportStat is packaged with a carrying case, lanyard, extra spring, two AAA-size alkaline batteries, and an operator’s manual.
